Neo-traditional is one of the most sought after styles worldwide, largely because it’s extremely versatile. Unlike more rigid styles like American traditional or Japanese, there are many different interpretations of neo-traditional. Neo-traditional takes inspiration from the principles of American traditional, including bold outlines, defined shading and packed color. However, it takes many creative liberties and that’s where you see an artist’s personal style come out to play.
Many neo-traditional artists take inspiration from the art nouveau movement, which was most popular from 1890 to 1910. This movement flourished in Europe and one of the most prolific artists in this style was Czech lithograph artist Alphonse Mucha. Mucha was best known for his stylized posters, many that featured elegant, young women surrounded by swirling florals and filigree. Today, we’re able to see many comparisons between Mucha’s art and neo-traditional tattoo artists, particularly from a design perspective.
In honor of the global obsession that is neo-traditional, take a look at 75 of our favorite tattoos from 25 different artists. These artists come from every corner of the globe—the United States, Spain, Germany and even Australia.
